What is Emergency Medicine?

What is emergency medicine?

Applied Philosophy

Dear Reader,

Emergency Medicine is the art of knowing what to do when we don’t know what to do.

The core strengths of the Emergency Room doctor are to:

  1. Resuscitate
  2. Make comfortable
  3. Refer

Our understanding of this aligns with our understanding of the role of Medicine, which is to:

  1. Treat the underlying cause.
  2. Lessen the ferocity of symptoms.
  3. Refuse to provide treatment that has no benefit.

When we appreciate our core strengths we must always appreciate our corresponding weaknesses. Emergency Room doctors:

  1. Do not have the benefit of hindsight.
  2. Do not have the luxury of time.
  3. Have to accept everyone, even those that wish to harm them.

Could this culture of fostering professional obligation even in the face of potentially hostile unknowns make Emergency Medicine a crucible of modern leadership?

Faithfully yours,
