Dear Reader,
Emergency Medicine is the art of knowing what to do when we don’t know what to do.
The core strengths of the Emergency Room doctor are to:
- Resuscitate
- Make comfortable
- Refer
Our understanding of this aligns with our understanding of the role of Medicine, which is to:
- Treat the underlying cause.
- Lessen the ferocity of symptoms.
- Refuse to provide treatment that has no benefit.
When we appreciate our core strengths we must always appreciate our corresponding weaknesses. Emergency Room doctors:
- Do not have the benefit of hindsight.
- Do not have the luxury of time.
- Have to accept everyone, even those that wish to harm them.
Could this culture of fostering professional obligation even in the face of potentially hostile unknowns make Emergency Medicine a crucible of modern leadership?
Faithfully yours,
