What is project management?

Applied Philosophy

Dear Reader,

An appreciation for project management is an important part of our shared journey towards success. Here are a set of original definitions specifically designed to accelerate the study of project management. Let me know via social media if you have any further questions.

What is a schedule?

A schedule is a contract of time brokered between an individual and their future self, within the context of a community. It is populated by events which define a set of one or more social roles. Each social role is subsequently defined in scope by a template of specific tasks.

What is a task?

A task is a contract of action brokered between an individual and their future self. It consists of three measurable descriptors, two rewards, and one goal.

The three measurable descriptors are:

  1. Action
  2. Due date
  3. Assignee

The two rewards are:

  1. Prudential value: The freedom to spend freely.
  2. Moral value: A sense of accomplishment.

The one goal is:

  1. Socialisation

What is a milestone?

A milestone is a collection of tasks packaged meaningfully into a clearly articulated and mutually agreed upon goal. Its three measurable descriptors are:

  1. Budget
  2. Start and end date
  3. Team leader

What is a project?

A project is a collection of milestones governed by three executive articles:

  1. Mission, Vision, Values.
  2. Core message to the individual. Core message to society.
  3. Acknowledgement of country.
